AR-15 I: Taking Your First Shots

Audience

This course is designed for people who want to become familiar with safe handling of AR-15 platform of semi-automatic rifles.

Course Description

This course will introduce responsible gun owners to the safe handling, proper maintenance, and effective use of the AR-15 platform in the context of civilian home defense.

None

Objectives
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the four universal safety rules as well as the four additional AR-15 specific training rules
  • Understand the history & misconceptions surrounding the AR-15
  • Identify the basic parts & functions of an AR-15
  • Demonstrate how to load/unload an AR-15
  • Understand how to safely break down an AR-15 for routine maintenance and cleaning
  • Describe the advantages/disadvantages of various AR-15 accessories & support gear
  • Learn & demonstrate the basic shooting fundamentals of an AR-15, including;
    • proper stance,
    • grip (four points of contact),
    • sling use,
    • loading and clearing ammunition, &
    • trigger control.
  • Learn how to verify zero on an AR-15, & recognize its importance and use.

What to Bring

Firearm and ammunition
  • An AR-15 style rifle (no carbines) WITH optic mounted and a sling attached.
  • A minimum of 40 rounds of ammunition in at least 3 magazine
Equipment
  • A magazine pouch is recommended but not required
  • Hearing and Eye Protection (Soft ear plugs under electronic muffs are recommended)
  • Appropriate clothing and a crew neck style shirt
